Statement by the President, Population Scientists Association of Uganda

It is my pleasure to join all Ugandans and the rest of the world in celebrating World Population Day 2026. This year’s national theme, “Unlocking the potential of Uganda’s population through technology and research to drive sustainable development,” reminds us that technology and research are important tools for improving people’s lives. It also highlights the critical role of technology and research in harnessing Uganda’s demographic potential to accelerate sustainable development. The theme supports the global theme, “Realizing the hopes and aspirations of young people today and for the future,” which calls on all of us to invest in young people and help them achieve their full potential.

Uganda has a young and growing population. This presents a great opportunity for our country. If we invest in quality education, good health, appropriate skills development, innovation, and decent employment creation, our young people will become a strong force for national development. Research and reliable data help us understand our population and make better decisions. Technology has made it easier to collect and use information for planning and service delivery. We should continue to invest in research and technology so that development programmes are based on evidence and respond to the real needs of our people.

As the Population Scientists’ Association of Uganda, we remain committed to promoting quality population research, supporting young researchers, and providing evidence that helps shape policies and programmes. We believe that good research is key to achieving sustainable development and improving the wellbeing of all Ugandans. I therefore call upon government, universities, development partners, the private sector, civil society, and all citizens to work together in supporting research, embracing technology, and creating more opportunities for our young people. By doing so, we will build a healthier, more productive, and more prosperous Uganda.

As we mark World Population Day, let us remember that it is our most important resource, and that every person matters. By investing in our people today, especially our youth, we are building a better future for our country.

Thank you!

“For God and my country”
